Zuil van Lely

The tallest basalt column in the world!

The column of Lely is a work of art by Hans van Houwelingen on the Stadhuisplein in the center of Lelystad. The column is 30 meters high and is made of basalt boulders. These basalt boulders symbolize the boulders from which the dikes around the Flevopolder are made. And on top of the column was a statue of Cornelis Lely, the city's namesake and the 'architect' of the Flevopolders. This sculpture was made by the artist Mari Andriessen. In 2002 the whole was unveiled.
