Zuil van Lely
Right in the city center of Lelystad you will find the highest basalt column in the world. On top of this column is a statue of Cornelis Lely, the founder of Lelystad. Engineer Cornelis Lely (1854 – 1929) was the brain behind the IJsselmeer polders and the namesake of Lelystad, the capital of Flevoland and thus the youngest province of the Netherlands.
Statue of Lely
The statue of Cornelis Lely is a second cast of the monument to Lely on the Afsluitdijk, by the artist Piet Esser. This statue stands on a column of 32 meters. But make no mistake: the column on which Lely stands is not his pedestal.
Artwork and tribute
De Zuil itself is also a work of art, made by Hans van Houwelingen, and refers to the basalt stones that were used to build dikes to drain the polder and protect it from the sea. De Zuil is therefore also a tribute to the dike builders who built the dikes with a lot of heavy manual work. Houwelingen's father was one of those powerful dike builders.
