SECRET OF LELYSTAD

Lelystad has added a Tourist Transfer Point: TOP Onze Kas. A Top is a starting and resting point for cycling and walking routes through Lelystad. The TOP is located at the restaurant Onze Kas and was officially opened on 9 July by deputy Harold Hofstra of the province of Flevoland and alderman Annemieke Messelink-Dijkstra of the municipality of Lelystad.
During the opening, a column was unveiled with five tips about what to do in Lelystad. An information board with a signpost was also unveiled. The pole is 4 meters 10 high and on top is a ship. This marks how high the Zuiderzee used to be above us. Information about the walking and cycling routes and the history of Flevoland is also included.
Owner Patrick Kok says: “We are very happy that we were able to realize this TOP partly with a subsidy from the province of Flevoland and the municipality of Lelystad. Great for the people who stay overnight with us, and for the residents of Lelystad. This TOP tells about the origin of Flevoland. Because remember: everyone over the age of 60 has lived somewhere else. From the TOP you can walk 3 marked hiking trails and it is also a starting and resting point for the cycling routes. Visitors to the historic cycling and walking route can listen to the Story of Flevoland via an app and take a quiz. What is also nice: what started with reading books has ended in a nice collaboration with the Flevolands archive and Batavialand.”
Deputy Harold Hofstra joins in. “The leisure sector is a sector that is constantly evolving and developing. It is important for our province to attract more visitors and to allow them to stay longer in our province. The special thing is that our neighboring countries in particular find the Story of Flevoland unique and come to Lelystad and Flevoland especially for this. As residents of this province, we often take it for granted. But look up and realize: 70 years ago ships sailed four meters above the IJsselmeer.”
Alderman Annemieke Messelink-Dijkstra: “Tourism is important to Lelystad and that has translated into the Leisure Economy Implementation Program that is now in place. Part of this is developing new cycling routes, a Walking Guide and opening TOPs such as TOP Onze Kas together with entrepreneurs. It is wonderful to see what entrepreneurs and residents can create together. We hope that TOP Onze Kas will invite visitors and residents to enjoy even more recreation in Lelystad.”
